TOP 5 AUTO PREPARATION TIPS FOR MAJOR STORMS
Before a storm hits, it may be hard to find gas in your area. So no better time to fill up than NOW. And while you’re at it, fill up a portable gas container if you can. It may come in handy for you or your neighbors.
CHECK OIL AND BATTERY
Now’s the time to make sure your auto is in good operating condition. Check the oil and top off if needed. Make sure your battery is in good condition and check other vitals such as tire pressure and fluids. If you can get to an auto repair shop, have them do a diagnostic. If you have to leave your area, you’ll have peace-of-mind that your auto won’t let you down.
Best to keep your auto off the road such as in a garage. And remember to keep your auto facing outward so you can get out quick if needed. If you can’t garage your auto, park it away from trees or other structures that may be prone to wind damage. And try to park at the highest point possible in the event of flooding, but still close enough to your home for easy access.
In the event your auto is damaged in a storm, it’s a good idea to have “before” pictures for your insurance company when you make a claim. Try to take pictures from each side of the auto and even the top.
Keep a few basics in your auto before you head out to safety. Include the following items in your auto:
1. Fresh water
2. Cell phone charger
3. Extra clothing
5. First aid kit
6. Essential prescription medications
7. Road maps (yes, even printed maps as a precaution)
